Jamie Maxtone-Graham The Long Bien Picture Show

Adjacent to the Red River in Hanoi and in the shadow of the French-built Long Bien Bridge, the neighborhood of the same name is ardently working class. It is the home of the Long Bien night market, a crowded and intense wholesale venue where goods from all around the country and the region are delivered and distributed. It only comes to life after the sun goes down and by the time most people are going to work the next morning, it is over.

This series was the continuation of a project begun in 2009 within the market itself and concluded with these images in 2010 (the 1000 year anniversary of Hanoi) in the surrounding streets and lanes, collaboratively producing portraits at night.
