Kazuto Ishikawa Humanity

Humanity is a series that deals with the subject of identity loss in contemporary society due information overload. In the present day, as people have turned into lumps of information, we seem to be in danger of losing sight of our own identities. In Humanity, after shooting a person’s portrait and their surroundings, I reproduce each image with a huge quantity of ink one transparent sheet. Adding successive layer of images before each one is completely dry causes the ink to mix together and the subject’s contours to be lost. By repeating this analogue action, I am able to draw out distinctive colors from the subject – i.e., a variety of information from the photographs. The features that emerge from this combination of colors express the subject’s actual identity.
